Thanks for a thoughtful article. I personally find that typography is an art form, and that both serif and sans serif fonts can be poorly set or well set.
A font like Helvetica in the hands of a good typographer can, not only be eminently legible, but can be quite beautiful. By the same token serif fonts may also be beautifully set. One of my favorite serif fonts is Zapf Elliptical, which in good hands, can also be a delight to the eye.
With the advent of computer-based printing, everyone fancies themselves an expert. Unfortunately just selecting fonts and their sizes is not typography. Letterspacing (kerning) and leading can change the whole look and feel of a block of text.
A new magazine called CODEX (especially for typomaniacs) may be found at http:// and some very interesting work on typography can be found at http:// .

Days later, Cliff Pickover highlighted a curious factoid: When Nash wrote his . thesis in 1950, "Non Cooperative Games" at Princeton University, the dissertation (you can read it online  here) was brief. It ran only 26 pages. And more particularly, it was light on citations. Nash's diss cited two texts: One was written by John von Neumann & Oskar Morgenstern, whose book,  Theory of Games and Economic Behavior   (1944), essentially created game theory and revolutionized the field of economics; the other cited text, "Equilibrium Points in n-Person Games,"  was an article written by Nash himself. And it laid the foundation for his dissertation, another seminal work in the development of game theory, for which Nash won the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences in 1994 .

Very insightful article on a truly landmark writer who is apparently STILL being assaulted by ignorant naysayers. In fact, the insane level of vitriol spewed here in the comments section is indicative of nothing more than ignorance and jealousy. None of you (Miramon, Jace X Anders, Rosewater) will EVER produce anything that even comes close to the impact that Slaughterhouse-Five has had on the modern world. Insolent, unimaginative and illogical individuals such as yourself have no place in balanced contemporary culture. You are, for all intents and purposes ANTI-INTELLECTUAL and your lack of comprehension here perfectly demonstrates this fact.
