Some but not all journals check the accuracy of all reference citations; thus, citation errors sometimes appear in the published version of articles. To minimize such errors, references should be verified using either an electronic bibliographic source, such as PubMed, or print copies from original sources. Authors are responsible for checking that none of the references cite retracted articles except in the context of referring to the retraction. For articles published in journals indexed in MEDLINE, the ICMJE considers PubMed the authoritative source for information about retractions. Authors can identify retracted articles in MEDLINE by searching PubMed for "Retracted pub¬lication [pt]", where the term "pt" in square brackets stands for publication type, or by going directly to the PubMed's list of retracted publications .

In the late 20th century and early 21st, the scientific communities found that the communicative value of journal articles was still much less than it could be if best practices were developed, promoted, and enforced. Thus reporting guidelines (guidelines for how best to report information) arose. The general theme has been to create templates and checklists with the message to the user being, "your article is not complete until you have done all of these things." In the 1970s, the ICMJE (International Committee of Medical Journal Editors) released the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals (Uniform Requirements or URM). Other such standards , mostly developed in the 1990s through 2010s, are listed below. The advent of a need for best practices in data sharing has expanded the scope of these efforts beyond merely the pages of the journal article itself.

During the late 2000s, due to the influence of computer storage and retrieval systems such as the Internet , some scientific publications, primarily those published by Elsevier , started including graphical abstracts alongside the text abstracts. [15] The graphic is intended to summarize or be an exemplar for the main thrust of the article. It is not intended to be as exhaustive a summary as the text abstract, rather it is supposed to indicate the type, scope, and technical coverage of the article at a glance. The use of graphical abstracts has been generally well received by the scientific community. [16] [17] Moreover, some journals also include video abstracts and animated abstracts made by the authors to easily explain their papers. [18] Many scientific publishers currently encourage authors to supplement their articles with graphical abstracts, in the hope that such a convenient visual summary will facilitate readers with a clearer outline of papers that are of interest and will result in improved overall visibility of the respective publication. However, the validity of this assumption have not been thoroughly studied, and a recent study statistically comparing publications with or without graphical abstracts with regard to several output parameters reflecting visibility failed to demonstrate an effectiveness of graphical abstracts for attracting attention to scientific publications. [19]

One of the hallmarks of a Quality Report is a description of tests of change over time. Priority will be given to those manuscripts that have multiple tests of change. Reports should provide descriptions of the change process, whether successful or unsuccessful, and include insights regarding why planned interventions did or did not lead to improvement.  Figures are helpful in illustrating changes over time (., run charts, statistical process control charts). These figures should be annotated to show when the interventions were implemented.
