On July 16, 2012, gunfire erupted at a BBQ held on Danzig Street; 23 people were wounded, and the lives of Shyanne Charles and Joshua Yasay were taken in what has been dubbed as the worst mass-shooting in Toronto’s history. 10 Minutes away, RISE had just finished its third poetry show of the month.
Had RISE not have been happening that evening, some of the youth that had attended, would have been at the BBQ and in-direct risk of harm. Lives were lost, and communities were shaken due to a senseless act of crime that has affected the entirety of Scarborough and Toronto. This was enough confirmation for Randell to continue to RISE and provide a platform for positive and safe self-expression. We are youth providing youth with opportunities to express their creative voice, develop artistic and creative leadership skills, and build capacity for professional artistic practice, while encouraging them to work from a place of love, social consciousness and political engagement.
