This course aims to give a comprehensive introduction to the study of language and gender. We will examine how gender is reflected and constituted in language, that is, how women and men speak, how language is used to accomplish femininity and masculinity. Students will become familiar with a wide range of studies exploring the language used by women, men and children in a range of different contexts, including informal talk among friends and talk in work or public settings. The course encourages a critical engagement with past and present approaches to the study of language and gender and draws on a range of different theoretical and methodological frameworks to show how gender and identity can be analysed in language.

Other examples of the genre from the nineteenth century include Michael Field 's 1892 volume Sight and Song , which contains only ekphrastic poetry; Algernon Charles Swinburne 's poem 'Before the Mirror', which ekphrasises James Abbott McNeill Whistler 's Symphony in White, No. 2: The Little White Girl , hinted at only by the poem's subtitle, "Verses Written under a Picture"; and Robert Browning 's My Last Duchess , which although a dramatic monologue , includes some description by the Duke of the portrait before which he and the listener stand.

OK. This might not work with your ‘nightmare’ groups and requires your own judgement but if you’re having a bad day…tell them! I had an almighty pain flare up one day and couldn’t stand for long periods of time. I told my gorgeous Year 7 group and they were so thoughtful and well behaved for the rest of the lesson. Following that afternoon, I would have 2 or 3 of them come up to me, without fail, each lesson and ask how I was feeling or if I needed any help with anything. Even if it just means carrying a box of books or something up/down the stairs, it’s help! Take it! It doesn’t make you weak.

I’m not 100% percent sure but I think that the themes and topic were mixed up, as a TOPIC is the matter of the subject as shown in the examples above, the topic should be the downfall of Ireland and how people forgot how their ancestors fought for freedom but a THEME is like a moral or a warning, like how in movies/books when you study them in high school, the whole storyline is based on a motto or warning or even just a saying such as ‘curiosity killed the cat’, in a novel a person could make one mistake because of being curious and get many people confused (reference to Zia in Rick Riordan’s the ‘Red Pyramid’ fiction book based on Egyptian mythology where Zia’s father made a mistake of unleashing a monster because he was curious and accidentally wiped out his entire village including him (except for Zia who survived). So please don’t leave angry comments because of me, I’m definitely not the best at English (I suck at it) but just to clarify the meanings of a theme and topic, thanks guys!
